The city implements two trash collection systems:

TRASH COLLECTION:

YARD WASTE PROGRAM:

If you live in a house or rental property with less than four dwellings, you more than likely have trash barrels that you supply for the collection of trash from your backyard.

Most customers in multi-family and commercial programs will choose to use trash bins or dumpsters provided by the trash collection company.

  • Residential customers may find that they require extra services. Large clean-ups, demolition or remodeling projects may require special services for which Athens are ready to provide.

  • Special Hauling: Estimates will be given for removal of debris. Bin Service: 3-cubic yard temporary bins (commercial dumpsters).

  • Roll-off Service: These containers will handle up to 30 cubic yards of material.

  • Bulky & Hard to Handle Items: For removal of large, bulky items including: water heaters, furnaces, bed springs, mattresses, dressers, couches, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, patio furniture, etc., contact our office for specific collection procedures. (Please remove or secure all appliance doors in order to protect children.)

Green waste such as grass, leaves, and clippings should be collected in any number of standard trash containers. Please apply a "Yard Waste" sticker on the container. Please turn the barrel(s) so the decal is visible to the collection crew.
Call the Public Works Department at (626) 403-7240 for "Yard Waste" labels to place on barrels for green waste collection. PLEASE DO NOT PUT YARD WASTE INTO PLASTIC OR PAPER BAGS. Trimmings bundled and tied into 4-foot lengths by 2-foot wide, not exceeding 35 pounds will be collected if placed next to barrels. Tree trimmings larger than 10 inches in diameter and palm fronds are not considered yard waste. Set the designated barrel(s) next to your regular trash barrels on your regularly scheduled pick up day.

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

  • Standard service allows for collection of up to (1) cubic yard or 220 gallons of trash/green waste not to exceed 50 pounds per container, per week. This is equivalent to approximately six 35-gallon trash barrels.

  • Containers must be in one location. Athens cannot carry them up or down stairs or lift them over fences and must be within 10 feet of the point to which the collection vehicles can drive.

  • Free and clear access to your trash containers must be provided.

  • Should the driveway/accessway be blocked requiring a return visit, there will be an extra charge.

  • No responsibility will be assumed by Athens for closing gates or pets getting out. Pets are to be contained on collection day.

  • Standard rubbish containers are to be used. Oil drums are prohibited.

  • To avoid an interruption of service, please do not place hazardous materials into the trash. Athens Services provides updated information on handling hazardous waste.

" Hazardous Waste - To avoid an interruption of your service, please do not place hazardous materials into your trash.  If hazardous waste is identified, it will be tagged and not collected.

Most paints, pesticides, herbicides, and petroleum derivatives such as motor oil, oil filters, and solvents are considered hazardous wastes.   All non-empty aerosol cans are also banned from the trash.  (Aerosol cans marked "Toxic" or "Flammable" are allowed if they are completely empty.)

Any materials that are flammable, poisonous, or explosive are not allowed in the trash.  This includes pool chemicals and antifreeze.

All electronic waste, such as televisions, computers, cell phones, radios, microwave ovens, fluorescent light tubes/bulbs, batteries, and other items such as thermometers, thermostats, pilot light sensors, and some gauges that contain mercury or other harmful materials are not allowed in the trash."

All customers are participating in a program whereby the entire waste stream is taken to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) where virtually all recoverable and recyclable materials are extracted from the commingled trash. The MRF process involves the recovery of recyclable materials first through a series of elaborate sorting and separating machines and then by hand along a convenyor belt system.

The nearest recycling center location is:
